Rowan
Creek Community Garden, Poynette
Several
MGs worked together to bring a community garden to the village
of Poynette. The idea for the garden began after the previous
year's MG training, as local trainees looked for a new volunteer
project. The village administrator, Dennis Linn, was instrumental
in helping obtain the site, village support for water and help
from the parks department. From site development to removal of
buckthorn, to construction of fences, MGs put many hours into
making this garden a success. They recruited community gardeners
with articles in the local paper and at the village garage sale
event.
Many
garden techniques including square foot gardening, raised beds,
mulching and composting were utilized for the gardeners to learn
from. Gardeners in the "Rowan Creek Community
Garden" included family groups, a disabled person (who inspired
the construction of a "high-rise bed" to accommodate
her wheelchair) and residents of a senior housing complex, who
shared their produce with others in their building. MGs who were
instrumental in starting the RCCG also organized the Poynette
Area Gardening Association to support gardeners of all types.
